Scorpions, Grasshoppers, or Cockroaches?

Throughout Beijing, there are several sections of the city where the locals have food stands set up on motorized vehicles, or in food stands, or run restaurants out of their homes. On our way to the Forbidden City, Ralph and I stumbled onto all three food options in one place. Ralph had lamb on a stick and I had grilled, caramelized corn-on-the-cob.

The guys behind the counter tried to talk us into having scorpions (they are still alive on the stick, moving around), grasshoppers, or cockroaches. Gross.

This woman was stationed on the corner with a motorized cart, grilling different types of meat on the back. She was very aggressive (as are most vendors in Beijing) in trying to get us to buy her food. She lowered her price down to 1 Yuan for a hot dog, which is about 13 US cents.

When we turned the corner, there were homes lining both sides of the narrow street. Some had tables set up outside, some inside, or were "take out" only. The Lonely Planet guidebook that says that these places are consistently excellent and extremely inexpensive, where you can get a beer and meal for $3 US. We are still deciding rather or not to give it a try.
