Talk to Me

I went to see the movie Talk to Me this week. It tells the story of legendary DJ Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene Jr, an ex-con who was given a chance at a DC radio station to "tell it like it is." Petey quickly becomes an iconic radio personality not only because he played incredible music but also because he spoke directly about race and power in America like few people ever have.

I highly encourage everyone to see the film, as the entire cast is superb. Nearly every actor in this film deserves an Oscar nomination, but it would be a crime if Don Cheadle, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Taraji P. Henson do not receive nominations. The movie itself is highly entertaining and interesting, especially the horrific moment when they learn that Martin Luther King had been shot and riots start in the streets of DC. Petey is credited with calming the hurt and angry crowds over the radio with honest, straight talk. I walked out of the movie thinking that we need someone like Petey Greene today to "tell it like it is" instead of telling us what we want to hear.
